Health Food

Cheap, healthy food suggestions? Either fast-food or cooked.?

I'm looking for cheap, healthy fast-food suggestions (if there is such a thing.) Or a way to eat cheaply, yet healthy. I'm a college student who is short on cash and loves food. :)

  1. Macdonald's dollar menu side salads.....subway
  2. Fruits and veggies. When you buy them, prepare them right away. Clean them, cut them up , and put them in single serve packages like baggies. Then you have healthy and fresh ready to go when ever you are.
  3. you have to look at the basics that you need. the majority of any meal you eat should be grain. so if you dont mind pasta, you can buy big value brand bags of spaghetti or whatever kind of pasta you like, cans of sauce are relatively cheap too. if you want fast meals, make up big batches of noodles, store them in the fridge, portion out what you want for dinner /lunch whatever nuke it up and nuke up some sauce , there you go. get some frozen or fresh vegetables (also cheap if you get basics like carrots, celery, cucumbers, tomatoes. whatever you enjoy) boil those up as a side, and for a little protein youve always got meat balls, you can cook up a little ground beef , put that on there. chicken is a nice source of protein that is very healthy, but the best in my opinion is turkey. if your a person who likes seafood, this is also a good option. for lunches, sandwiches are IDEAL because you can put a little bit of everything all on one bun. get yourself whatever kind of bun or bread you like. i like rye bread because its not as nasty as 'whole grain', but its better for you then white. put some nice turkey on there, spinach or lettuce is nice, piece of swiss, i like mustard although some people say thats weird. ive also heard you should eat the same thing for breakfast consistently. i find cold cereal wakes me up and doesnt upset my stomach early in the morning. i usually follow with a piece of fruit or yogurt. always have your favorite fruit around for snacking on, fruit are cheap and healthy. i also like to snack on cereal and peanuts (also good for protein if you want a lighter lunch) you can make cheap stir frys for dinner, throw some strips of chicken in there. you have LOTS of options, but the best thing is to eat at home, it will save you money and whole foods are SO much healthier.
  4. Subway is a great suggestion! They have a lot of healthy choices that are cheap! Also the roasted chickens you can now buy at the store are terrific meal stretchers...have warm one night with some microwavable veggies and/or rice, and the next day, chop the leftover chicken, add a bit of light mayo, some onion and celery and make a sandwich on whole grain breads or wraps. Pasta is cheap and can be healthy with just a homemade simple marinara or a store bought jar. Or get some ready made pesto and toss with hot pasta.
  5. Fast food is never completely healthy, but if you apply a little pickiness then you can make it healthier: - throw away part or all of the hamburger bun - avoid ketchup (high sugar content) and mayonnaise (high fat content) - always ask for as many veggies as they'll pile on, including pickles - for the love of whatever deity you may believe in, AVOID FRENCH FRIES, there is nothing healthy about them - avoid soda and bottled juice (too much sugar); buy a sport bottle and take tap water with you wherever you go - avoid coffee (too costly) and learn to make a good cup of tea for yourself at home. Have you learned to cook? If not, try it, you may be surprised at how simple it is. And you needn't limit yourself to instant ramen noodles or kraft dinners (although those are fine once in a while), either. Find the nearest grocery stores -- not just one, you need to use more than one and watch their specials. That way you can often get nearly-fresh produce and bread at dirt-cheap prices. Do you have time for a part-time job? Restaurants are always looking for help and free food is practically guaranteed; bakeries sometimes let their staff take home the two-day-old stuff that they can't sell. If it's dry, place it in the microwave along with a cup containing a couple tablespoons of water; nuke for half a minute or a minute, and that will improve the taste and texture considerably.
  6. Baked potatoes with fresh tomatoes and cucumbers and so on.
  7. Zatarain's, Amy's and fresh vegetables...
  8. Try subway or a pita place (Mr. Pita or something like that) Or just go grocery shopping and take an hour out of your week to prepare foods for the whole week or next few days. Frozen veggies are THE BEST because they're vine-ripened, cheap and yummy. Add them to mac and cheese with tuna. So yummy.
  9. Here's a website for eating fast food (while still being healthy!) There are several other diets on this web too! (I wanna try the grapefruit juice diet!) http://www.idiet4u.com/diets/subwaydiet.html I think there's also a site on there with mcdonalds, wendys, burger king, etc. while losing weight.
  10. One word . SUBWAYS
